SIMPLE not easy.

Identifying the process, working backwards from success and actually trusting in that process to ultimately achieve more, is SIMPLE, not easy.

Personal Finance, Buying Rental Properties, Creating Passive Income, Rehabbing/Training back from a Severe Injury, Eating Healthy, Exercising Everyday, Connecting with your friends, Building a New Community, Showing Up…

All things that can be SIMPLE but are not easy.

Identifying the process and the habits that will be the scaffolding to support these pursuits is essential. We must ask and work through questions such as,

  • “what actions am I taking currently?”
  • “what actions must I take to make progress?”
  • “what are the most basic (first principle) habits that support these actions?”

I was riding the stationary bike with a student-athlete who recently had surgery and he said it so point blank, “It will be easy, when I go home for summer break all I have to do is eat, sleep and train.” We both sat there for a moment, riding the stationary bikes taking a pause and then I said you are right, it is SIMPLE not easy.

It is the utmost importance of understanding this difference. Understanding this sets the stage for you to better understand who you are and what is up ahead within the journey.

The ACL return to performance process is an example that I have been a part of as a performance coach at the collegiate level, working with female and male student athletes across all different sports. Taking a step out of coaching and sport this concept applies to so much more in life. Specifically, a book I have recently gone back to listen to on audible, The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz. This book discusses how practicing these four agreements provides the opportunity to be free of self limiting beliefs and by “making a pact with these four key agreements, an individual is able to dramatically impact the amount of happiness they feel in their lives, regardless of external circumstances” said Don Miguel Ruiz.

The Four Agreements

  1. Be impeccable with your word
  2. Don’t take anything personally
  3. Don’t make assumptions
  4. Always do your best

The Four Agreements shines light, almost with a stoic influence on how simple it may be to live life at peace and have freedom of external influences. As the four agreements really comes down to holding ourselves accountable and our perspective of our life.

Understand your purpose and build scaffolding of habits within your environment to support pursuing it. Coming to the understanding that development is more SIMPLE than easy can provide a new perspective where you can be more prepared when taking steps towards your goals each day.
